Everyone who has moved knows the problems that come with the very first evening. The truck is gone, the beds are up, and somewhere in 40 identical boxes are the toilet paper and the phone chargers.
The Open First Box is our answer, and it is the thing customers mention back to us more than anything else we do. It is a bright white box you can spot among all the brown boxes, printed OPEN FIRST in red, with a laminated essentials checklist and a marker clipped to the side. You go down the list and decide what your household cannot get through a night without.
We do not decide that for you, and that is deliberate — only you know whether it is a CPAP machine, a cat’s bowl or a specific mug. What we do is make sure the box exists, that it is unmistakable on the truck, and that it comes off first and goes to the room you need it in rather than the stack in the garage.
Save the small stuff for move day — we’ll bring the box.
How it works
- A bright white box, so you can spot it among all the brown boxes
- Printed OPEN FIRST in red, so nobody has to read a label to find it
- A laminated essentials checklist and a marker, clipped to the side of the box
- Thirty-two prompts across two columns, from medicines and a can opener to spare keys, pet food and a CPAP machine
- A Notes section, because the list will not have thought of everything in your house
- You choose what goes in. We make sure the box exists and stays findable
- Loaded last, so it comes off the truck first
- Carried to the room you need it in, not stacked with the rest
- One per household, or one each where that is more useful — a child’s box is its own thing
Step by step
How it actually goes
-
You get the box and the checklist before move day, free
Not on the morning, when you have no time to think. The list does the remembering for you — it is the things people call us about afterwards, collected in one place.
-
You fill it, we keep it separate
A household with a toddler, a household with a dog and a household of two adults need completely different boxes. You are the only one who knows which you are. Tick what you need, write in what the list missed.
-
On last, off first
It is the last thing loaded, which means it is the first thing off the truck at the other end — before the furniture, before anything else.
-
It goes to the right room
Bathroom things to the bathroom, kitchen things to the kitchen. A first-night box in the garage is just a box.
Questions
The Open First Box questions we get asked
Not the one you needed? The full FAQ covers pricing, moving day and what we will and will not move — or just call and ask.
What actually goes in it?
Whatever your household cannot get through a night without — you decide, which is the point. The checklist prompts you with thirty-two of the usual suspects: medicines, toilet paper, a can opener, scissors to open the other boxes, phone chargers, a change of clothes, bedding and a towel, toothbrush and soap, coffee and a mug, snacks, paper plates, a flashlight with spare batteries, basic tools, extension leads, spare keys, a night light, pet food and bowl, bottled water, important records, and medical equipment like a CPAP machine or hearing aids. Then there is a Notes line for the things a printed list could not know about your house.
Do you fill it for me?
No, and that is deliberate. Only you know whether the thing you would be lost without is a specific mug, a child’s toy or a piece of medical equipment. We supply the box, the list and the marker, keep it separate from everything else, and make sure it is the first thing off the truck.
Can we have more than one?
Often that is the better answer — one per person, or a separate one for a child. A child who can find their own things on the first night in a strange house is a materially easier evening for everybody.
What about medication and documents?
Those should travel with you in the car, not on the truck and not in this box. Same for jewelry, passports, and anything you would be in trouble without for even a few hours.
